The Premier League team announced on Thursday that the acquisition of Brazilian winger Antony from Ajax Amsterdam has been finalized.
The 22-year-old, who signed for an originally reported sum of £80.75 million ($93.65 million) and previously played for Ajax under United manager Erik ten Hag, agreed to a five-year contract with an additional year’s option, according to United.
The club’s website quotes Antony as saying, “This is a great moment in my career to be joining one of the most historic clubs in the world.
As Ajax won its third consecutive Eredivisie championship and advanced to the final 16 of the Champions League, Antony scored 12 goals and provided 10 assists in 33 appearances across all competitions.
Since his debut in 2021, he has earned nine caps for Brazil, scoring twice.
For me and my development, playing for Erik ten Hag was ideal, Antony said. “His teaching and playing philosophy brings out the best in me,”
My experience at Ajax was wonderful. I’m eager to join my new squad and contribute to Manchester United’s success now that I’m prepared for the next challenge.
United has six points from four games and is currently ranked 12th in the Premier League. On Thursday, they visit the bottom-dwelling Leicester City.
